The dumbbell pullover is one of the most botched exercises people do in the gym.
Some view it as a back exercise, while others view it as a chest exercise.
The truth is it can be both, but for bodybuilders, it’s probably best used to help build a bigger chest and expand the ribcage.
MHP athlete and bodybuilding legend, Victor Martinez, explains how to perform the exercise properly in this video.
Typically, Vic will use this exercise as either a finisher or pre-exhaustion exercise.
When performing the exercise you want to make sure to keep your chin up. Since we’re focusing on the chest, there’s no need to go all the way back while performing the movement. Doing so will get the lats involved and the primary focus should be creating tension on the pecs.
Keep your arms as straight as possible. Each time you bring the weight back to the top focus on squeezing the chest muscles.
Lastly, remember to inhale as you bring the weight back behind the head and exhale as you bring the weight to the top of the movement.
