Get Your Bench Right with Jason “HUGE” Huh

Though much of what occupies the imaginations of bodybuilders revolves around surface factors like appearance and performance, the best in the sport know that controlling the ego is critical in reaching your full potential.

Methodical and measured in his approach, IFBB Pro bodybuilding veteran and Animal athlete, Jason “HUGE” Huh has mastered his bench technique via years of perfect practice.

Strong enough to hang with the best of them, Huh chooses to leave the PR (personal record) max lifts to his powerlifting brethren.

Instead, what Huh seeks to max out is the full and complete development of the pectoral muscles through very precise stimulation on the flat bench. He does so by placing a priority on each of these three points of emphasis—posture, pump and good form.

Jason Huh Bench Press Tips and Tricks

Discussing posture, Huh attempts to avoid one of the most common pitfalls of bench pressing for muscle growth—the overuse of the front deltoids and triceps.

He endeavors to remove the recruitment of support muscles on the bench and as such shift all of the responsibility for moving the loaded barbell to his pecs.

His advanced tip for doing so is to bring the shoulder blades together, pinching the scapula, and as such arching the back and puffing out the chest.

Such posture amplifies the stretch and contraction of the pecs from the start to the finish of the movement. He doesn’t downplay the significance of this element of his training, stating clearly, “The most important aspect of overall chest development is posture and positioning on the bench.”

Since prioritizing the pump is job one for Huh, he prefers a rep range of 8-12. This is a common, oft-recommended number of repetitions for maximizing hypertrophy.

But, again, a new mode of thinking for an exercise where ego tends to interfere. Not only are the reps abundant, but Huh also primes the pump by shortening the range of motion in favor of his continuous tension lifting philosophy.

Huh stops just short of touching his chest at the bottom and pushes back up a couple inches shy of lockout, doing about ¾ of a complete rep. Doing so prevents his shoulders and triceps from getting too involved while also keeping him from resting at the top, giving his chest a break.

With continuous tension there is no respite until the bar has been re-racked. The amount of sets Huh utilizes in a given workout varies, as he notes, “depending on food intake, sleep and whether you’re dieting or gaining.”
Finally, good form is key for Huh.

With his forearms at a perfect 90 degree angle to his biceps at the bottom of the movement, Huh does not move the bar with explosive force.

Again, he sets his ego aside and exacts control over the weight, moving the bar through space in a slow, smooth fashion, feeling the target muscle doing all the work.

He further breaks it down, “Breathe in on the eccentric part of the movement and out on the concentric part… Keep it fluid and controlled. No bouncing, explosiveness or resting on the chest.”

How To Add More Weight To Bench Press With Jason Huh

For many, adopting Huh’s technique will be a wake-up call. Sobering in the need to lower the weights and rethink the form of a movement many have been performing since they were teenagers.

This sort of re-imagining of the bench press might not be easy. But nothing worthwhile ever is.

It is in the process of setting aside your ego and being open-minded enough to experiment that tremendous progress could be made.

Very good advice! And I will take this pros advice and use this, and maybe use it in my other lifts as well. And would love to read more of what he has to say regarding lifting
