What is rhodiola and what does it do?

Rhodiola rosea is also commonly called roseroot or golden root and belongs to the plant family known as Crassulaceae. Rhodiola primarily grows in areas that are dry and sandy, reaching high altitudes in the arctic parts of Asia and Europe. The rhodiola plant has been known to reach a high of 30 inches, producing yellow blossoms.

Rhodiola has been used for centuries as a traditional medicine in the countries of Scandinavia, Russia, and others. Between the years of 1725 and 1960, it was used to treat a variety of medicial conditions and was used in many more countries, including France, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Iceland, and the Soviet Union. After 1960, the amount of clinical studies that reviewed rhodiola reached more than 180 and while it has extensive research, many of these benefits may be “lost in translation.” This is because many of the reports and clinical studies that have been performed have been in Slavic and Scandinavian languages, with little resources in the West devoted to translating these long, technical documents.

What are the benefits of taking rhodiola?

For centuries, traditional folk medicine believed the rhodiola had a myriad of benefits. These include increased physical endurance, longevity, work productivity and resistance to sickness and high altitudes. In addition, it was believed the rhodiola was able to help treat anemia, depression, fatigue, impotence, gastrointestinal ailments, nervous system disorders, and infections. In a part of Siberia, a bouquet of roots was given to couples before their marriage to help enhance fertility and help promote the giving of birth to healthy children.

In Middle Asia, rhodiola was used to treat the flu and regular cold during Asian winters – it was believed to be the most effective treatment available. In addition, doctors in Mongolia prescribed it for treatment of cancer and tuberculosis. Because of its many benefits and value, rhodiola’s physical location and ways of extraction were kept secret. Rhodiola was so popular and necessary that people used it to trade for luxury items like wines, fruits, honey, and garlic.

When it comes to modern medicine, people still believe rhodiola has amazing benefits. In 1969, it can became recognized as an official Russian medicine. This means that the organization that regulates the drugs Russians consume (much like we have in the United States) recommended that drug for medicinal purposes and approved preparation and production of the liquid extract.

Rhoidiola comes with medicinal and pharmacological studies and reports that confirm it’s usage as a stimulant for fatigue, or asthenia. It also fights somatic and infectious illnesses, and in those individuals that are healthy it can help reduce fatigue and increase memory, attention span, and productivity.

In Sweden, rhodiola became officially recognized as a Herbal Medicine Product in 1985. It has been described as an antifatigue agent and as a plant with stimulant characteristics. A book published in 1997 called rhoidola one of the most used psychostimulant herbal medicinal products.

How much rhodiola should I take?

You should always strictly adhere to the label instructions found on every supplement. With that being said, common dosages of rhodiola are 5-10 drops taken a 2-3 times during the day. It should be taken 15-30 minutes before a meal for a period of 10-20 days.
