Obliques

Obliques Muscle Anatomy Diagram

Seated Barbell Twist Instructions

  1. Sit down on a flat bench with your feet around shoulder-width apart, planted firmly on the floor.
  2. Hold a barbell across the back of your shoulders (not your neck), gripping it just outside shoulder-width.
  3. Keep your chest tall and back straight, and engage your core for stability.
  4. Slowly rotate your torso to one side, keeping your hips and legs still.
  5. Pause briefly at the end of the twist, feeling the contraction in your obliques.
  6. Return to center, then rotate to the alternate side.
  7. Continue alternating sides for the desired number of reps.

Seated Barbell Twist Tips

  • Don't look from side to side. Keep your head facing forward.
  • Keep your abs tight throughout the whole set.
  • Keep your back straight.

What would be the best machine substitute for this exercise?

If you have an oblique machine in your gym, that would work best. If not, a twist with a cable at mid-level height would work. You would have to do a side at a time on that, though.
