As a child I was pushed into sports early. From gymnastics at the earliest age, to diving and dancing, to tae kwon do where I was that little kid they would carry out in the splits at demonstrations to later break boards with my kicks. At the age of 11, I had fallen in love with basketball and I got my first pull up bar. I would do push ups and pull ups every day before school so that I would be strong enough to shoot long range jumpers and also to look more muscular in my jersey. I started lifting weights in a gym and doing plyometric programs at the age of 13. I really wanted to be able to dunk the basketball. As I got bigger, stronger, and much more explosive, I excelled on the court and was also pushed by my peers into playing football which I did secretly against my mother’s(a nurse) wishes.
I walked onto the University of Western Ontario’s football team as a running back, a position I had never played before. I bounced around between RB, SB, and defensive HB never really getting the playing time I feel I deserved. While training in the gym one day, a former member of the national bobsleigh team saw me lifting and enticed me to go to a try out. I was successful after a long weeding out process that lasted months and made it onto the national program. I have raced throughout North America and all over Europe.
After bobsleigh I came to the realization that training for explosive sports, was to me, just as fun as the participating in the sport itself. I loved the preparation process. Practicing. Powerlifting was thus a perfect fit. Through powerlifting I have gained a new appreciation of practicing and mastering a craft. The process is a welcoming journey. It has opened up many opportunities and introduced me to a very wide array of personalities who all share a love for the iron and physical culture.
When I am not training, or coaching other people, I spend most of my time with my girlfriend, Janet and/or my nose in books. I strive to always be developing my mind, my physical being, and the relationships I have the privilege of sharing with people.
