BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) Daily Calorie Calculator

The basal metabolic rate (BMR) and calorie calculator is a excellent tool for working out how many calories your body needs on a daily basis depending on the amount and intensity of your exercise regime.

This BMR tool works on a proven formula and is very accurate. The calculator uses two formulas to calculate your body's daily calorie requirements.

  1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Formula
The basal metabolic rate formula takes several variables like height, weight, age and gender to calculate your calorie needs as if you did not do any exercise.
  2. Harris Benedict Formula
The Harris Benedict Formula takes the number produced by the BMR formula and multiplies it depending on your activity level.

The only factor it omits is lean body mass and thus the ratio of muscle-to-fat a body has. Remember, leaner bodies need more calories than less leaner ones. Therefore, this equation will be very accurate in all but the very muscular (will underestimate calorie needs) and the very overweight (will over-estimate calorie needs).

Hi, I used the calculator to get an estimate of my BMR but the results say that it is accurate unless you are very muscular or very overwieght. Since I am a very overweight female, I'm wondering how would I get a more accurate estimate for my BMR? Thank you

Hey Sharon,

The calculator is likely overestimating your caloric needs. You can get a better idea by subtracting a few hundred calories and go from there.

Wow. Usually i eat under 1000 calories now but, i entered my data. I'm 75 inches tall, weight in at 271, age 16, and male. My intake of calories should have been 3572 calories while i only exercise once a day. Fascinating.

I'm a bodybuilder 5'6, 156Lbs. Now it says I should take in 2687 calories to maintain BUT the thing about this is I'm trying to build muscle but at the same time have at least a flatter stomach. How would I go about this? Just bump down the calorie intake or would that effect how many calories I should get to build muscle?

Just wondering, I seem to be inbetween two of the activitie levels i.e I train with weights 4 times a week but I train very intense and as heavy as possible. I also do two HIIT workouts in the week. My job is behind a desk most of the day so i'm not sure whether I should be moderately active or very active?? Help!

Im 38 WF , 168lbs, almost 5'8" ... I eat 1200 calories of raw fruits, protein bars, lots of fiber , veggies, etc. No potatoes rice or other " white" foods 5 days a week and 1400 calories on Wed & Sun. I walk 8-10 miles / 5 days a week @ 4.0 mph and Crunch Cardio videos 3 days a week for 30 min. No weights or resistance training. I am trying to lose 20 lbs. I have been on this program for 4 weeks. I havent lost a single pound and it's starting to tick me off. I have lots of energy and sleep like a trooper but I'm just not losing this weight. What am I doing wrong?

I am always unsure as to what is meant by "activity level" because the only real physical work I do is in the gym - and I leave it ALL in the gym. Outside of it, I conserve as much energy as possible, leading a very sedentary lifestyle. I don't work, I sleep a lot, I eat close to 35-45-20 every 3 hours.
What level of activity does this entail?
Damned if I know...
