BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) Daily Calorie Calculator

The basal metabolic rate (BMR) and calorie calculator is a excellent tool for working out how many calories your body needs on a daily basis depending on the amount and intensity of your exercise regime.

This BMR tool works on a proven formula and is very accurate. The calculator uses two formulas to calculate your body's daily calorie requirements.

  1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Formula
The basal metabolic rate formula takes several variables like height, weight, age and gender to calculate your calorie needs as if you did not do any exercise.
  2. Harris Benedict Formula
The Harris Benedict Formula takes the number produced by the BMR formula and multiplies it depending on your activity level.

The only factor it omits is lean body mass and thus the ratio of muscle-to-fat a body has. Remember, leaner bodies need more calories than less leaner ones. Therefore, this equation will be very accurate in all but the very muscular (will underestimate calorie needs) and the very overweight (will over-estimate calorie needs).

Hey Steve,

First off, I would like to thank you so much for the information that you post on this website. It has helped me tremendously.
I have transformed over the past year from a 6'4 frame with 260 lbs of mass trained specifically for football, to a much leaner 6'5 220 lbs. I have been using your PMB workouts for about two months now and it is an awesome routine. I just used this tool to check my calories and it is saying a whopping 6000 calories just to maintain weight?! That just seems a little insane to me. I guess I'm just trying to confirm that this is correct?

19 years old, work a physical labor job 5 days a week, and I am currently on your 5 day split PMB routine.

Thanks for any input man

Great resource - thank you! I do have a question: I am female, 5'8'', and my caloric needs come out to 2094 for "moderately" active, and 2330 for "very" active. I am currently in my second round of P90X, and beyond that I do fair bit of walking the dogs. Sometimes throw in cycling. Should I be looking at the moderate level, the very active level, or somewhere in between?

lol this has to be the most inaccurate calculator i came across, it says i burn 4339 calories if im sedentary lmao! yeah right, i WISH. other calculators are more accurate, ranges from 2000, to 2400 on others which is probably correct, this, no way.

My shoulders lag, they always have. My life only allows a 3 day per week training schedule. Sat-Chest, shoulders, tri, legs, Tues back, traps, bis, Thurs-chest, shoulders, tris, sat-back, traps, bis and so forth so that every other week, my upper body muscles get trained twice and my legs get trained once per week. I was thinking of adding some time to train shoulders exclusively one time extra on the week they only get trained once, so that I can give them extra attention. I currently do giant sets for them of side laterals, d-b press, upright rows, Arnold press. They burn, but no caps. They look odd with my chest and triceps. I don't want to over-train them. Maybe I need new exercises. What else can you do for the front delts besides front raises. Rear delts get trained with traps and look even with the rest of me. Anyway, I look to you all for advice. God bless you.

Hi, I used the calculator to get an estimate of my BMR but the results say that it is accurate unless you are very muscular or very overwieght. Since I am a very overweight female, I'm wondering how would I get a more accurate estimate for my BMR? Thank you

Hey Sharon,

The calculator is likely overestimating your caloric needs. You can get a better idea by subtracting a few hundred calories and go from there.
