September Training Question:

I use weighted crunches for upper abdominals, but can’t put anymore weight onto my chest and perform the crunch correctly. Is there another way I can train my upper abdominals?

Answer:

Lying Cable Crunch is another way to train the upper abdominals. This exercise is a cross between the lying crunch and the kneeling cable crunch. Use more weight and a low rep range to focus on increasing abdominal development and strength in your upper abs.

Attach a rope to a low pulley cable, lie face up on the floor about 18” directly in front of the pulley with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Reach back and grasp the rope. Bend your arms and place you hands above your collarbone Bring your elbows in tight to your chest, and lock the arms in this position for the duration of the set. Contract the abs to curl you up, rolling the shoulder blades off the floor. Hold this top position momentarily before slowly lowering back down. Exhale as you reach the top of the rep. Note: Don’t allow the weight to touch the stack at any point. For increased intensity, after you reach failure, reduce the weight and continue with the set.
