    Default 3 hour workout

ok - this dude that ill be working out with for a couple of weeks
told me his workout plan is 3 hours long

to which i replied "you been drinking?"

but, to my eternal embarrassment, when I tried to explain to him that
an hour (mine is an hour and a half or so if i include my running and light bag workout)
is enough, i fell short on my reasons (ive read that so many places and seen it repeated over and over that perhaps ive been brainwashed because i came up with a couple of reasons but i could have been much more convincing)

now keep in mind neither of us are bodybuilders and neither of us are big
(im 5'10 - 180 with around 12-14% bodyfat) and neither of us will enter a competition in the near nor far future

my question is ... why is 3 hours GENERALLy not a good idea

(btw - i think his ab routine is around 40 minutes (no weights))

thanks in advance for any replies

oh, and the workout is a full body workout twice a week

can be over training if that long, ie doing too many sets per muscle group

plus you will get tired and not put in as much effort with the last 2hrs or so, so ur not effeicent.

cortisol levles rise after 40mins or so.... somone with better knowledge can explain this

It's only bad if you don't make any progress and most workout routine's should be done with in 60 to 90 minutes. And if it's 3 hours it sounds like a fat slew of unnecessary workouts that could produce the same results it half the time with other workouts.

180 at 12-14% is actually a pretty decent size.

I don't even care why it's a bad thing to work out for so long anymore, I don't even remember for that matter. I just know that if I can't get done what needs to be done in an hour or less (and it usually is less), then I have not worked hard enough. There is absolutely no reason to be doing a resistance routine like that. Even if you did 1 hour of cardio after every workout, that still doesn't make up for that other hour.. I call shenanigans my friend, don't use his workout.

The rise in cortisol levels, which begins at about the 45 minute mark, will signal the body to store fat. Also testosterone levels drop off at around the same time, so you're not getting good results due to that either.

Brutal workouts like that are ok, but VERY infrequently. Also, he may be taking breaks during it, and I don't mean just rest between sets, I mean, like 20- 30 minute breaks.

Think about how the military trains, or some of the elite MMA fighters. They have 3- 4 hour long sessions, granted there are breaks involved.

Depends on your goal... if he's training for a marathon/triathalon, or endurance... sounds great... if your goal is to pack on muscle or get stronger.... good luck.. you are going to need it.... honestly if you aren't fatigued after 60min of lifting... you aren't lifting hard enough, or are lolly gagging......

oh and there's science and stuff too
