it's completely dependent on how much muscle you have.
Always take high protein whole foods over protein supps if you have the option.
I prefer to keep my protein shake for immediately after a workout, but if you feel you need more protein during rest days (which is important!) and no whole foods are available, then a protein shake in the morning isn't a bad idea.

Hi mate, I take whey protein on off days, mainly because I am lazy and cant be ar*ed to cook, plus the bioavailability of whey protein is much better than you would get from solid protein foods. What I do is use whey protein, complex carb powders and Udo's oil, a complete meal, although I do have some solid foods through the day

Yup, I can't get myself to cook some chicken up so I resort to making a shake instead.

I take whey all day every day! lol.

It's easy in the morning when I'm up and out the door in 10 minutes to get my wife from work. The a proper breakfast when I'm home about an hour later. I eat loads of whole foods as well but the whey shakes are great for getting a fast digesting protein!

So why do they recommend 3 scoops a day?

You run out of whey faster = more money for them
Always put in 110% in everything you do so that when someone else shows up with 100%, you still got 10% on them.-Chidi Ekebere

I have a whey shake almost every day when my wife wakes up (She gets up at 6:30 and I sleep till noon some days). then if i am really lazy or just over slept i will make a smoothie with a scoop as a meal replacment.

I used to have 2 scoops to a shake, 2 shakes a day, every day, and ate protein bars in between times.

That was all it took to put me in hospital. My digestive system is permanently f***** now

I have read about it happening to other bodybuilders, especially when whey protein concentrates were the norm. It can cause the human digestive system (which is not actually designed to process milk from other mammals) to react negatively, resulting in lactose intolerance and IBS (both of which I now have).

It's a very embarrassing condition and people don't like to talk about it. Especially super-men bodybuilders!

It definatly bothers my stomach when I drink too many shakes in one day. Nothing can replace real food. But sometimes there is just no other option for me. On my best days I only have a half scoup of whey all day long and at my worst I will have 3 scoups and a bar. It all depends on how prepared I am for the day with my meals.

I take whey on my off-days as well as I am currently taking a thermogenic weight-loss pill which eliminates my appetite almost completely. This way I am able to meet my daily calorie and protein requirements especially if I am in a hurry and too lazy to crack open and cook 12 egg-whites I hate draining that crap out of the eggs.

It is certainly convenient, but I would recommend buying egg pure egg white in bladders or cartons from the supermarket and consuming that (however you want to) than a whey protein shake every time. And, of course, there are other options in terms of the types protein isolates available. Just IMHO.
