Question Can creatine cause migraine headaches???

Hi, I've long suffered from headaches... both sinus and migraine. I recently started taking creatine. I've noticed that I feel a lot stronger in the gym. At the same time, I've also noticed that my headaches seem to be a bit worse. Does anyone out there know if creatine can cause migraine or other types of headaches or make them worse? If so, why? Oh, and fyi, I have at least 8 glasses of water a day.

Sometimes working out hard and lack of food/rest can cause it too. I have never had a headache or migraine because of creatine.

I know that if you use too much creatine it can dehydrate your body and cause headaches. Creatine uses a lot of water to digest and make it's way to where it needs to be and then even more water to metabolize. Dehydration is a side effect linked to creatine use, so maybe try cutting down the amount of creatine you're using and drink more water? you should get 1 oz of water for every 2 lbs you weigh, so if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink 75 oz of water a day.

If it keeps up, talk to your doctor, he'll have more info available to him.

I've never had any migraine related problems due to creatine intake and I used to be quite succeptable to migraines!!

As mentioned increase your water intake and perhaps consider lowering your creatine intake, if you find that it persists consider changing to capsule/powder form of creatine and see if that works for you

I used to get terrible migraines as a kid, I found that it was because i was not drinking enough. I now drink about a pint of water every 30-40 mins, and havnt had a headache for years.

Creatine can supposedely cause dehydration so it may be just a matter of increasing your water intake.

My mom suffers from migraine and I get them too. Sometimes even after working out. It starts from my left eye then to my forehead. Then it spreads to the entire of my head. And the light, it hurts very much and a slight sound can also hurt very much that it pushes me to throw up. I get these for like once a week. Right now, my treatment for the pain is ultram and a cold/wet towel on the face. It takes some time before it really starts to work but at least it cuts the edge off pain away. So there you go. Just want to say you’re not alone and am also open for suggestions on how you treat yours.

Great tips there, thanks. In my case, I take Tylenol for mild attacks and fioricet for heavy attacks. Works all the time. I guess I can consider myself lucky because my friends’ medications don’t work for them. You can ask your doctor about fioricet and see if it will help you.

    Default migraine creatine

I started getting bad migraines (partial loss of vision, numb tingling sensation, nausea, inability to read writing, extreme sensitivity to light, very painful headache, even delerious) putting me out of action for 1 to 2 days, sometimes hospitalised when i was 15, usually getting a few a year until i was about 19 when they stopped. when i was 25 i started taking a 99% creatine monohydrate and I got a few more migraines and didn't realise the connection between the two. I stopped taking creatine and stopped getting migraines.
I'm now 27 and i took the same kind of creatine a few months ago in the morning before a workout and had the worst migraine i have ever had, i'm now sure that it is a trigger for me.
I always consume a few litres of water a day especially when working out.

I would like to take another form of creatine if it didn't trigger a migraine but i aint gonna take the chance.

Have you tried zomig. That is what I'm currently taking and it makes a difference. However, it doesn't get rid of it. Nothing I've tried gets rid of it.

I personally think that headaches, among other things, are a symptom of poor diet and that society covers up their lack of diet responsibility with over the counter medications. BUT just drink a gallon of water a day and you'll be fine. I've been drinking a gallon a day for almost a year and I feel great 99% of the time!
