Default Change of profession --> MMA

Ive decided to quit playing rugby for many reasons, and want to start MMA. I know it sounds like every teenagers little fantasy but i really want to do this.

Only problem is im 19 now and have very little experience, all i got is a couple years standup in kickboxing etc and no ground/grapple work. Ive got a fairly solid chin but apart from that im a complete noob.

Where should i go from here?

    Much love

I think the best thing you could do is find a club that will teach you definatly try and learn Brazillian Ju jitsu as it seems to be the most effective grappling technique other than that i think just get into a club get ur head down n work ur nuts off

If i ever go travelling Expat i might take you up on that one.

I think theres a club that teaches sambo in my city as well as a thai boxing gym. I think if i start on both 2 lessons a week with each then practice on my own i could make pretty good progress.

I think id rather a 1on1 trainer though, but there either impossible to find or bloody expensive =/

Here's what you need to do. Pick one fighting art and get good at it, 1-2 years. Then you pick the art which can exploit the weaknesses of your first style and learn it and learn to defend against it, another 1-2 years while continuing to increase your prowess in the first. By this point (3-4 years) you will start to know your own style and you begin to shop around and add to your bag of tricks from everything that suits you. You need someone who will ride you like a nickel whore on penny night and one that will start with teaching you how to walk again, re-learning you how to move before you ever throw a punch. PM me where you are (city) and I can suss out through friends in blighty where you should go.

You don't need to join MMA for all that fun stuff, Poss. I'll just fly you out to the US.

Here, in Florida, I have a guy who teaches me Yudo, Jujitsu, Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, and Sambo. Its a great all around MMA program, but based on the fact that everyone in there has some form of multiple years of martial arts training (Mine was Judo and Jujitsu). I think Expat had it down with his last response... which Im too lazy to "quote"...lol

Think Expat hits the nail on the head really. I've done Judo, Karate and Akido over the years. From a personal experience I would suggest a grappling art would be best to begin with.

I plan on taking some jiu jitsu myself soon enough, I think MMA is an awesome sport and if you can break into it and make a career out of it more power to you.

I'd recommend taking it up as more of a hobby before you plan on making a living off of it though. Think of how hard it is to reach a professional level at any sport...13 out of every 10,000 high school athletes go pro...thats .13%.

I'm not trying to knock you or say you can't do it, but I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket if I were you. I just think it would be so difficult to get into it at and make enough dough to call it a profession...
Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is Nothing...
