I wouldn't supplement carbs at all if you are trying to put on lean mass...dextrose is the only thing that I would ingest after workouts to spike the uptake of your post workout protein.

Get yourself in to complex carbs and maybe more fiber if you are not at 25 grams a day or more.
Veggies are key and a potato here and there wouldn't be bad.
Oatmeal - plain
Brown rice works too.

And keep carbs under control as far as not taking in a lot before bed - unless you are working out at night.

I try to get as much fiber as possible but I have trouble in combining it with my high protein fast meals during the day so I normally try to get a can of something green at dinner. But thanks for the info on carbs, I under the impression that you needed carbs post workout to build muscle.

Yes you do need them post workout and I recommend making it double your protein - So if you have 30 grams protein, do 60 grams carbs.
But I believe that real food has far more benefit to your body than something manufactured when it comes to carbs.

The reason there are so many people doing protein supplements (and this is just my opinion) is that you would be taking in so many calories of proteins and carbs that you wouldn't be able to keep cutting properly if you did both from foods all the time.

Dextrose counts as cards too

Yep, you need to take simple carbs after your workouts regardless of whether you're cutting or not. I take 50g of dextrose after workouts only.

Okay, so do you take a supplement for those simple carbs? Or do you eat something with some sugars?

Dextrose (aks glucose) is available on line from supplement companies or you should be able to buy from pharmacy's (diabetics use it) it comes in powdered form....

Thought id add to this as i also have a question on carb supps, i've got a bit of a problem, just started a bar job and it means working from about 5.30 - 12.30 ish without a break, so obviously im gonna need to sort somthing out here in terms of a quick shake, ive got my protein shake but neva needed a carb supp before. So can i buy carbs to add to the protein shake, im thinking this would be cheaper, or would you recommend buying a weight gainer? i've had a quick look and i can only really find weight gainers, those of you that take carb supps for meal replacements.. what do you use??

Thanks for any help guys!

There's a product called "NOW Carbo Gain" which is 50g of complex carbs per 1/2 cup. It cost 14.99 for 7lbs. They also have "NOW Dextrose" for simple carbs and it's about $22 for 15lbs. Maybe you could look those up where you get your supplements
