Default Vitamins and Minerals: Important or hype?

I learn new things every time I read one of Doug's diet and nutrition articles. Doug, your knowledge of diet and nutrition never ceases to amaze me! In this article, Doug asks the question, are vitamins and minerals important or is it just marketing hype? You can read the article here:

I really enjoyed reading this article. A lot of people (myself included) might know about how much protein, carbs, fats etc we need to build muscle but don't really know much about vitamins and minerals and how they effect our bodies. I'll definitely be bookmarking this and using as a reference.

DITTO!

Doug,
As I've stated earlier on - people on this forum don't know how much of a blessing it is to have you on board.
There is some big money spent for this kind of advice and you have been kind enough to post it. (At no charge)
Thank you - always appreciated!

I've always been telling people that if they want to die at the age of 100, they should take vitamin C, vitamin E and fish oil.

I'm a big fan of Vitamin C and I can attest to its effectiveness. But lately there are numerous studies that vitamin E can cause early death, that we should avoid taking vitamin E. It seems like the contradicting studies in health and medicine is never-ending.

And it is not only vitamin E but vitamin supplements in general that the studies are telling us to avoid. But in these studies I've read, vitmain C is one of the very few vitamins that is supposedly safe and recommendable.

I'm not saying we believe these studies and take it as conclusive without a grain of salt. Many I'm sure are disputing it. As in all things, moderation is the key. And if there is one vitamin that I will recommend for as long as I breathe, it's got to be vitamin C!
