I don't have a leg to stand on... :-(
Hi friends,
I just got back from a visit to the doc, because I've been having pain in & around my knee. Yitmy has been giving me some good advice but the pain was still bugging me so I went to get checked out.
The good news is that I probably don't have a muscle tear or cartilage damage.
The bad news is that I might either have something called PatelloFemoral Syndrome, or something else called Iliotibial Band Syndrome. The Internet mentioned that I may want to avoid squats & deadlifts for now, as well as any martial arts. (I guess my plans of signing up for Aikido will have to wait, lol)
I have to make an appointment to go get some X-Rays. In the meantime, the doctor advised wearing a knee brace during my gym visits & sticking with light weights when I work my legs. He also recommended some anti-inflammatory meds to take. After we review the X-rays, it may call for some physical therapy.
That sounds fine to me because I've been sidelined for a few weeks and am looking forward to getting back in there a little at a time.
These syndromes may or may not be obscure, but if anyone has any advice I'd be glad to hear it. I'll keep you updated as the situation develops.

deep tissue massage and acupuncture!!!! can help a LOT in addition to following the advice of your doc.
PT might be useful if you get somebody good to help you reprogram how your leg muscles fire with some subtle cues from the feet on up.

This sucketh mate. I don't know about this particular malfunction but you should question the doc about whether or not building up the muscle will help alleviate your symptoms.

An update of your previous correspondences and the reasoning of the current course of therapeutic diagnosing.
1. No pain on the steps, ascending or descending.
Well if it was chondromalacia I suspect you would have more discomfort with steps
2. The pain is on the right side of my knee, about an inch below the joint. It is also sore directly behind the joint on both sides.
this is much more curious for I still do not know where you describe so an X-Ray would be helpful to rule out stress fractures
3. Normally I can walk with no problems. However, if I have been walking for a while, it starts to act up and the soreness sets in. Twisting is fine.
Twisting rules out cruciate involvement, but again weight bearing ie standing reproduces the discomfort so again something dealing with the bone is a suspect
4. The exercises I performed two weeks ago were Smith Machine Squats, Stiff Leg Deadlifts, and Dumbbell Lunges.
Compressive exercises also related to needing an X-Ray
5. Although both legs were sore a few days after the workout, my left leg feels perfectly fine now. The discomfort is solely in my right leg.
6. I can balance on each leg for 20 seconds, although I did experience soreness when I balanced on the injured leg.
Weightbearing again
7. I have no previous knee or leg injuries.
8. I do not play any sports.
9. I am a 24 year old Library Assistant. I'm usually on my feet for about 7 hours a day, although I do get the chance to sit down from time to time.
Based on your responses I rule out chondromalacia/Iliotibial band syndrome. And favor an X-Ray to rule out stress fracture(s)
Ok then do you have discomfort when you sit for a while and then stand up? I do not have a response yet...possibly previously deleted- one of the primary reasons to have your questions aired on the forum instead of PMing me. PMs also cause a hassel when trying to open and follow thought processes from one message to another. So in the future, gang, please use the injury site and I will be able to respond more quickly.
Stove keep us posted on the results of your tests.

Yitmy, you're right. The private messages can get a bit overwhelming. I'm sorry about that. I'll keep my info in this thread for as long as the situation develops.
I sent you a PM dated 7/18 that said I experience no major discomfort after sitting for a while and then standing up. The message must have gotten lost in the shuffle, don't worry about it.
Based on your responses, I am now even more curious to find out just what the hell is wrong with my leg haha. Curiosity killed the cat, I suppose.
Thanks again for the help, I'll keep you updated.

Update:
Well, the X-rays of my knee came back so I went to the doc today to check them out. They came back....perfectly normal? No problem with the knee whatsoever, apparently. Doctor felt the area that was giving me pain, and had me do some stretching. Now he's pretty sure it's a hamstring issue. (His reasoning: either poor posture or not stretching correctly).
He wrote me a prescription for physical therapy at a place in town, and he seems to think a few weeks of this will have me in the clear. If not, then I'm supposed to return so we can look at everything all over again.

Sounds pretty promising Stovebolt, glad to hear you'll be back in action soon.

First Day
Today was my first day of physical therapy for the leg injury.
It's still early to come out and say exactly what the problem is, but my therapist examined my leg and had me do some leg exercises/stretches. It turns out that my hamstrings are really tight and I do not have a very good range of movement with them. My doc would like me to improve by about 15 degrees. I have another appointment scheduled for tomorrow and a couple next week also.
One thing he did say was that he didn't recommend that I keep squatting. Or, if I insist on it, not to go as low as I've been going previously. This concerned me a little because I'd like to keep building muscle, and I've spent enough time here to know how important it is to squat.
I suppose if I do keep squatting, I'll avoid heavy weight or just not go down to the floor...
I'll have more information as I attend sessions and discuss my situation. However, I'm happy to report that I'm back in the gym and following Shaun's 4 Day Split. I still do legs, but I've been building up in weight slowly.
Thanks for the all the help so far, I'll keep you updated.
- Stove
