C'mon now... can't help if you don't tell what's happening. You CAN do this but you might need a little tweak to your routine so let's have it...

Ok... well....
I'm still doing my jumping, but when I do it I get this vision in my head of the bar popping out of the walls and thumping down on my head and giving me a big ouchie. So now I'm scared to do them.

maybe it's too much cheating but perhaps you can try what I'm doing (unless of course we get a big finger wag from someone who actually does pullups and chinups ) ....for my pull ups training - I'm placing myself so that I can be in the up position already without the jump and then I let go of the foot support and work on lowering slowly over and over again - which seems plenty of a butt kicker for me at this point...
(I don't like the jumping right now either - mostly because I can't yet hold myself up if I arrive at the bar with any momentum )

Nothing wrong with this, its the negative portion of the exercise that is important, not the jump. Drive on!

I agree with Stik and Expat. Try doing the negative portion, lowering yourself slowly. If you can't pull yourself back up, just climb back up and again lower yourself slowly.
You'll get there Wolfy!!

No shame in asking for assistance or sharing your progress. I am reading this thread for advice on my own benching & chin-ups (which are less than impressive). So you're helping yourself and everyone else too.
