It's not really an "Equation" but a cross reference from books that were published.

"Accurate" and "body fat measuring" are not related. LOL As all measures are "Estimates" with +/- 3% error. (Except, DISSECTION, which I dont think you're up for)

So what I would do, especially if you have never had your body fat tested before. Is to use these numbers as a guide.

Typically when you lose body fat, your waist will be smaller (About 1 inch for every 5lbs).

Now if you want to "Cross Reference" or get a "Second Opinion" ask a trainer at your gym to do the 3 Site Caliper Measure on you. He'll pinch your skin in 3 different locations, and take your age and weight and come up with another number.

But chances are it will be +/-3% of the number that I gave you.

I'd steer clear of electronic BIA devices as they rely more on your body's hydration level and the devices that are used are not using the same formula/method that the research is based on. (Unless you have the $1500 version! )

It depends Have you ever trained your abs with weighted resistance, like you train your other muscles?!?

If you haven't given the abs enough stimulus to grow the ab muscles, then they will hardly be apparent.

YOu may have a "Flat Stomach" but no "ridges" or "Six pack" can be seen.

If this is the case, then you have to adjust the way you train your abs.
