In theory, it does all that but concretely, you probably can have a drinking night once a week and hardly be hampered by it at all.

I also like to have a drink every now and again. I am aware of the damage it does to my training but to never drink would have a massive negative impact on my social life so I'm in a constant struggle to find a balance.

Nice to see a thread discussing this in a sensible way rather than people just being flamed for drinking at all.

On the days when I do drink, how should I compensate with my calorie intake throughout the day. My thinking was to cut back on my fat and carbs so that my overall calorie intake (including alcohol) was as close to maintainence (neutral intake/expenditure) as possible - thus resulting in no fat gained and no muscle lost.

What do you guys reckon?

being at uni i drink quite alot often.

i think the only noticable way it affects my training is when i go to the gym the next day hungover i dont train as hard as i would if i was feeling good.

but life is there to enjoy, dont let lifting weights get in the way of your social life.
only time i would say stay away from drinks completly is if you're competing

i have the opposite sometimes, i went to the gym hungover after a lads holiday to greece, we got back in the morning and i was in gym by tea time, i couldnt eat as i felt sick, but at the gym all i did was cardio, it was horrific, i looked like **** my HR was dangerously high but when i went for a swim after then slept for 9hrs and went the next day for weights session i felt really good.
Sometimes the pain helps, try and do some work hungover or ill as when you get healthier the reversal will be less and rarely but possible better.

Reminds me of something funny when I was in college. Drinking is part of being in college, but being poor is also. Having little food in the house, and coming home drunk off yer ass and only having hard boiled eggs to eat because you wanted to have protien really sucks
