Default Conversion Factors - Reference

I thought it might be useful to make a reference thread in the Diet and Nutrition Forum. If you have any more, why not add them here, so that we get a comprehensive list of conversions. They're always useful to have.

Dietary conversions:
1 gram fat = 9 kCal
1 gram carbs = 4 kCal
1 gram protein = 4 kCal
1 gram alcohol = 7 kCal

Weight:
1 lb = 0.45 kg
1 kg = 2.2 lb

Calories/Kilojoules
1 kCal = 4.18 kJ
1 kJ = 0.24 kCal

I was just wondering, does the amount of calories in alcohol increase in proportion to the % of it? Like beer 4% Vs. Vodka 35% ? Probably a stupid question ....

Yes, the more alcohold = more calories, but I would worry about the lowered testosterone levels and man boob's !!

Alcohol has 7 calories per gram.

Thus, a double tot of a 40% whiskey has 50 mL x 40% x 7 = 140 calories from the alcohol alone.

A beer has 350 mL x 5% x 7 = 123 calories from the alcohol.

A glass of red wine has 200 mL x 13% x 7 = 182 calories from the alcohol.

In addition to the alcohol, sugar etc. in the drinks also add to the calories.
