Default Cissus

As most of us agree, fat loss supplements tend to be complete crap, and you have to follow a good diet and exercise regime to lose weight, and even then these supps dont have much effect.

I just saw a good article on a new supp called Cissus Quadrangularis, apparently from a plant grown in africa and asia, its high in ascorbic acid (vitamin c), carotene, calcium and phytosterols (steroid-like substance) such as potent Ketosterones that apparently supplt its main effects.

The research done on it, says that its effective at bone reformation after breaks, preventing Osteoporosis and providing powerful antioxidanr and anti-bacterial effects.

BUT, new research conducted by the University of Yaounde says that it significantly decreses bodyfat and enhances health.
A study in 2006 was done on 123 overweight (BMI of 25-29) and obese (BMI of more than 30) subjects, to take cissus twice a day for 8 weeks.

Obese subjects who took a placebo and a low cal diet of less than 2200 = lost 5 pounds 2% BF
Obese subjects who took cissus and DIDNT diet = lost 15 pounds 6% BF
Obese subjects who took cissus and a low cal diet of less than 2200 = lost 18 pounds 8% BF
The overweight subjects took cissus and DIDNT diet = lost 8 pounds 5% BF

Also, apparently the bad cholestoral decreased by 10%-32% and good cholestoral increased by 17%-51%.
And CRP ( inflammation factor that represents a risk of heart disease) decreased by 1%-21%.

Another study was done in 2007 with very similar findings.
Both studies indicate that while cissus can help lose major amounts of bodyfat, it can also help maintain muscle. This suggests cissus may have Anabolic properties since it appears to spare muscle mass while stripping bodyfat, despite no exercises was done.

To me these sound look sum interesting findings, what are your opinions on it guys?

hmmm, it seems very suspect to me the university used to conduct the tests. If it is an American product, then why use a university in a country like Cameroon to conduct the experiments? Ive heard it all before! Gav

Quite interesting...but I think the overall bottom line is that these were controlled calorie diets.
They may say it spared muscle - but I have a hard time believeing it would have prevented any muscle from being lost.
They also wrote this in the study...
Several other dietary supplements (green tea, soy, chromium, selenium, B-vitamins) have only marginal effects in treating obesity but they address other metabolic syndrome symptoms and thus were included in the formulation.
So, how do we know for sure that it was the Cissus that did the job?
Just throwing that out there.

Well im not really in favour of fat loss supps, frankly i find them to be complete crap, and im not necessarily in support of this supp cos i've never tried it myself, but remember there was only a certain amount of subjects who went on a calorie diet, sum didnt diet or exercises at all and lost quite a few pounds. And like it says there the other ingredients have been known to only have small effects, so perhaps this new supp does work? who knows, its starting to become more popular now, so im sure soon enough we'll find out whether it becomes a brilliant selling product or just another fake hype.

Some of those studies are always altered in someway though. We have all seen the results from Lipo6 or Hyrdoxycut and on the bottom you always see "results may vary." So these studies are questionable at best. Personal trial is really the only way to tell if it's the next miracle drug or not. Interested to see what Doug has to say about this one.

Hi, I agree with you...Trial is the only way, I have seen a write up on this supplement, but I will wait till I have seen some reviews from someone who has tried it before I would say if it is good or not, or just bull****....

Tripp? Gav? Ash? Anekdoten?

I'm not particularlily interested at this point - unless this may be sponsered by M&S? HHhhmmmm...

Well, tbh i'd be willing to try this for the forum to get a personal view on whether it works or not, not yet tho, after i've came back from both of my holidays, sumtime in the middle of August i'd be willing to buy a 100gram tub and see what happens, may be a waste but atleast we all know whether its worth it or not.
