There are a couple dead lifts you can do... stiff leg dead lift and regular with barbell are some of the popular ones. A lot of people like stiff leg, but I prefer regular. I also recommend plank to strengthen your lower back. Plank is safer because if you can't hold your own body weight, you'll just drop to the mattress... no harm done. If you do dead lift, you can actually hurt your back if you're not careful (i.e. wrong technique or weight is too heavy).

Stretching your back is easy. Just stand straight then bend over and try to touch the tip of your feet with your fingers. You can also do some twisting motions to the left and right when you're standing.
