Default One day rest ?

I know that when you workout their is supposed to be one day during the week that you don't do any workouts so your whole body recuperates, but lets say I didn't workout on that day, but I go for a bike ride, would that defeat the purpose?

As long as it wasn't an uphill day from the Tour de France, it wouldn't hurt. Only problem: if you're trying to grow, you need to eat extra calories to compensate for that cardio.

You can workout back to back as long as you're not working the same muscle groups.
BTW a bike ride is nothing, unless you have just done a leg day!

Yeah I agree with the others and heck, I go on bike rides even after legs. Long as you just spin in the saddle 'stead of really stomping the pedals. Cuz you'll be using diff muscle fibers, the slow twitch instead of the fast twitch fibers you used in your w/o. I think it even gets blood circulating in there real nice and helps with sorness. So ride that bike brother

The point of these days is to allow for CNS recuperation, which takes longer than your muscles to recuperate. When you do another form of activity, it will again stress the CNS. Depending on how often you are working out, I may recommend not doing anything on that one day.

Well geez, are we spose to lay in bed all day? LOL Not my style, couldn do it. Me and wifey have a ride we call - "Say hi to the neighbors" ride, where we just putz around, saying hi to the.. well you get it. Keeps the legs lose, we get outdoors, sunshine, fresh air.. Well if the central nervous system doan like it, it better find a way to deal with it.

Maybe not lay in bed all day but if you are doing a bike ride, it will still tax your CNS. Of course the intensity at which you are doing your bike ride will detemine the amount of CNS stimulation, and how much more recovery you would need.

Honestly, unless you are using chemical help or have the most incredible genetics/recovery time around, you are severly overtraining and not allowing your body to recover fully. I know that Arnold recommend working out 6 times per week, but honestly, he is in the top 0.1% in the population as recovery/genetics goes, and he was also using steroids when training. Six times per week is just too much for most people.

While some of your smaller bodyparts (ie-shoulders, arms, calves) may not tax the CNS system hard and you can do them more often, your bigger bodyparts (ie-back and legs) sure will. If you must, you could do those smaller bodyparts twice per week, but the bigger bodyparts should be left to once per week workouts.

Another option would be to use a Heavy/Light system in which once per week you do a heavy workout for a bodypart, and then later in the week, you do a light workout. This will help with CNS and muscle recovery, but will still allow you to workout the bodypart twice a week.
