Well, I am new to working out and i starting in around september. I wanted to get bigger and taller.
I need help to get bigger and taller. My dad is around 5 foot 5 and my mom is around 5 foot 2. I am around 5 foot 3 and age like 15. I would rather not be 5 foot 3 my whole life so I need a good workout routine that can help me. Also, I am wondering if any workouts actually can stunt my growth/ make me get shorter. I do not want these workouts. Aside from also getting taller, I would need to also get my numbers higher. Its been a while and I am still not going up at all. In all, I basically need a workout that would help me get my numbers higher, and to get me taller. If I need to give up working out right now, then that's fine to become taller. But I also need a nutrition plan or an eating plan to help me reach my goals. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. |

Welcome to the forum.
A workout routine will not affect your height. If your mum and dad are around that height there would be a good chance you would be too. Workouts do not stunt growth in themselves, improper training and carelessness with the weights can lead to bone/ligament/tendon/muscle injuries. Also take a look at this article for creating a good diet: http://www.muscleandstrength.com/art...ding-diet.html I would also take the time to read these two links aswell: BEGINNERS: Reference Guide Frequently Asked Newcomer Questions

First of all, these are my recommendations as a Pharmacy student, not as someone who has a degree within the field.
Second, there are no cheats in life... there are some things that have been proven to help in certain areas; however, it's mainly in your genes, so from what you've said it'll be impossible for you to be 6 foot or whatnot, these suggestions might be able to help some with maybe a couple of inches... maybe. That being said, I'll spare boring you with the molecular compounds, but certain anaerobic exercises such as yoga, martial arts, swimming, and cycling (as well as others) all make the body produce what's called the Human growth hormone (hGH). hGH is proven to thicken both bone cartilage and it increase bone density. To build up hGH requires exercise for a minimum of 10 minutes. Also, as said earlier, exercises that involve alot of stretching (such as yoga, martial arts, swimming, cycling, etc.) all build up hGH faster than other forms. So, in addition to a good workout, maybe a yoga/judo session or two a week wouldn't hurt. All that to say this, though... your genetic structure doesn't seem built in that manner that you wish that it was... however, that's alright, because even if working out won't make you any taller, it's good for you and you won't regret the time you spent on it. (Trust me dude I wish I had started years ago instead of just now getting into it.) ...and in case anyone has any questions about my info, here is one of numerous links on the subject of hGH. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12797841 |

hey mate, your height has all to do with your genes. There are dominant and recessive? genese for each and everthign in our body.
if you get two dominant genes, youll most likely be tall, if you get half half youll be average and etc. Theres nothing really you can do mate. But just thank the gene lord that your healthy and dont have any deformalities etc. just train and get wider best of luck ![]()

Thanks for the help guys, but I mean, I would hate to think that If I didn't start working out now, then I would have been taller.
Plus, which should I do, eat more and excercise more or eat less to get to less body fat and excercise. I heard I should eat much more than usual to grow taller, but I also do not want to get wider instead of getting taller. Also, Would running help me get taller? |

I think someone mentioned earlier in this forum that teens shouldn't try to lift any weight that is over their own weight. So, if your weight is 140 lbs, then don't lift anything more... not that you can do that easily if you just started.
When I was your age, I did none of the lifting because I didn't want to risk my vertical growth to be slowed down although there was no real proof that it would. The strength exercises I did were: 1. Jump squat (no weight) -> lower body exercise 2. Pull up and chin up -> back, forearm, biceps 3. Push up -> chest, triceps 4. Sit up -> abs Nothing for traps, unfortunately. Those are in addition to the basketball exercises (jumping, running, etc.) I did for being a basketball player in high school. As far as eating is concerned... well, you need enough nutrition but you don't want to eat more calories than what you need (if you do, you'll store them as fat). If you don't eat enough nutrition, your overall physical growth will be slowed down, including brain development. Nutrition means all types of vitamins, protein, minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron, etc.). and so on.

Not that it really matters, but... Actually, this is not quite right, in several areas! What you are describing applies for very BASIC traits, but even then, you are slightly confused. What you are describing is actually a very basic ONE gene system (not two genes), but you have 2 copies of that same gene, one from each parent. Complex traits have multiple genes that affect our phenotype (how we "look", or how our genetic information is expressed). Things like height have many HUNDREDS of genes, and it is the combination of these genes that determines height. If there were only one gene that determined height (tall or short), our entire population would be only one of two heights, either tall or short. There are lots of other factors in play as well since the expression of one gene can inhibit the expression of another gene, so there are very complex interactions at play here. Like I said, not that it matters in this particular case, but thought I would set the record straight, just in case!

My philosophy is that height is given, muscle is earned

workouts wont affect your height, but i wouldn't recommend doing heavy lifting exercises that involve putting the weight above your body (eg bench press) at your age. I would wait a couple of years. By heavy lifting i mean big weights eg 60kg+
But as your a beginner its not very likely that you would reach that level When i started weight lifting i was around your age and was about 5ft 1". My parents are both small but im now around 5ft 8" which isnt too bad. It makes me the tallest in my family anyway hope that helped |
