Default Transforming

This may be more rhetorical than anything else.

If you've seen my pics, you know I have a slab of blubber on me that I want to get rid of. I know you can't build muscle and cut fat at the same time. I'm working out (in a conditioning phase) trying to watch my diet and my weight is beginning to creep back up. I'm concerned that the protein shakes are pushing my caloric intake beyond what I burn and wonder if I should continue them at this phase.

Also, working out again, I'm getting the urge to beef up. If I continue on the current plan, can I possibly transform some of this blubber into muscle?

Confused this morning...

You cannot transform fat into muscle but during the early stages of training it is possible to both gain lean mass and lose fat at the same time due to the shock to the system of your new training habits.

I wouldn't monitor scale weight as much as I would monitor your waist measurement and body fat %. As your eating habits change, your weight may fluctuate. Weigh yourself once per week, first thing in the morning pre-breakfast and post toilet and no more.

Hope that helps your confusion!

I try to stay way from the scale. Weight during the beginning phases tend to change too much creating more discouragement than anything in my case. I hit the scale once every two to 3 weeks for now. I keep saying as long as the jeans still fit, it's all good.

Later after a change in routine once a week. It is truly hardest in the beginning. I had 4 starts last year, this year only one.

Like LTL suggested, only once a week, post poo, LOL.

Unfortunately I started the beginner routine 4 times last year (2009) and stopped 4 times. There was a lot going on at work with crazy schedules and home because of work.

Being that these issues have been resolved it will take being dead to stop again.

I know how that can be. When did you start and which beginner routine? I'm doing the home based barbell/dumbell 3 day split routine.

Right now, this routine 3 Day Workout For Beginners | Muscle & Strength

I'm in the 3rd week now. Tomorrow is Back/Biceps, Friday Legs/Deltoids

Next will be another 3 Day or a 4 Day Split for 9 weeks.
