Have you heard of kipping ? they use it alot in cross-fitness and i know its not best for growth but you will gain strength from it.

http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/excercise.html

the exercise video is called kippin concepts

Its about 20 vid's down.

Or train eccentrically, jump up as you pull so your at the peak of the rep then slowly lower yourself, do a few reps at a time and have a good 2mins rest, do about 3sets, should see some noticeable strength gains, but when i train eccentrically i get alot of ache for a few days.

Hope this helps

Shut up.
Who are you to imply that I am just being lazy?
I have said multiple times in this thread alone that I focus on intensity and overload. And there have I have never made a single post that would imply that I am not pushing myself enough.

On every single exercise I do, in the last rep, my neck is bulging, the blood is pumping, and the muscles are shaking a little bit.

You are so busy waving the flag and regurgitating the idea that everyone should be doing only the routine that you see as best, that you seem to assume that everyone who does something differently is a pansy, who just isnt trying hard enough.

Every day I do a new workout, I add more weight. After only a month of lifting, I have visibly seen gains.

So debate the merits of negatives vs pull downs if you want.
But get off your pedestal and stop implying that my will to work hard is what is in question.

On the official beginner back workout page, it suggests Lat pulldowns to start, over any body weight exercises.

I am following the advice I have heard many times over. I am leaving my ego at the door while focusing on the 6-12 rep rang and form.

I plan on moving from lat pull downs to doing multiple, slow, controlled, wide grip pull ups by the end of February.

Would I reach that goal faster if I did negatives instead? I dont know. I tried it, and came under the impression that my progress would be harder to measure as how many reps I do is dependent on a constantly fluctuating and immeasurable way of doing them.

But. My will to push the intensity level is not in question here. So pluck you verry much on that front.

I never liked negatives, i used the assisted machine and lat pulldown to get bodyweight pullups down. Then i started progressing with them.

If you can't do the full motion with your body weight, negatives are your best bet for progression. Overload is the key. Don't be ungrateful for the advice given to you. Take it, try it, and if it doesn't work for you, then skip it and move on, don't complain, because what you went through is called a learning process, and with that information you'll find out whats right for you.

I did them for a period of time, they work well!! No doubt about that, but the reason i didnt do them was because it was hard to quantify how much work you put in each time. But thats just me. But again, they do work well, i just dont personally like to do them, just personal preference. I use either assisted, body weight, and soon i hope to reach weighted.

Lat pulley machine is as good as pull-ups/chin-ups.
