Default How much weight should I have gained after one month of working out?

Last month (before I started lifting) I weighed 154lbs. After a month, I'm up to 158lbs. I haven't gained any fat or anything. So would that be considered good, bad, or average?

Are you sure you've gained no fat? What was your Body Fat % a month ago and what is it now?

If you've just started 5lbs a month is pretty average. So you're doing all right.

But truly, what matters along with weight gain, is how much of that weight is muscle.

Did you take measurements? (Chest, Bicep, Thighs, Shoulders?) Have any of those measuremetns increased? If they have, then you know you're gaining quality muscle mass.

Good luck,

Dave

According to Doug's thread I was 10% then and 6% now. But I did 4 or 5 internet calculators and one of them said I was as high as 19.33 and one said I was as low as 11.64%. So I'm kind of confused. All I know is I've lost 4 inches off my waist, so I'm thinking and hoping that the weight was gained in muscle. What do you think?

If you GAINED WEIGHT and your waist size shrank or stayed the same, then yes, most definitely gained muscle.

Good job!

One thing I have found is that there are many body fat % calculators out there that will give you crazy readings all over the place. My advice is to find one, stick to that, and track TRENDS up or down rather than absolute numbers.

In another thread, Doug suggests using calipers if you want a more accurate reading, which I am sure we all know intuitively. The general consensus around here seems to be that Doug's calculator seems to be fairly accurate however, so that is the one that I am using as a guide.

It's most likely water weight. Gaining 6 pounds in 2 weeks Is nearly impossible.

I agree with what's been said here.
As to good, bad, or average, i would say it is perfect! You're gaining 1lb/week, that is the ideal rate. However if you're unsure, consider the time you weigh yourself and that day's consumption, as there's a possibility that weight is empty, and in your stomach. I've seen myself vary in 4lbs in 1-2 days with a change in my diet, not muscle or fat.
