Default How important is warming up and stretching?

In the past two years when I began working out I never really warmed up prior to lifting weights. How important is warming up and how should I properly warm up.
In terms of stretching I stretch during my rests ,stretching the corresponding worked muscles..
Is this the proper way to stretch?
Thanks in advance.

Warming-up is important, as it gets the blood flowing through the muscles, and can also prevent injuries.

You can perform some light stretches AFTER you have done a 5-10minute warmup.
Might be a good idea to check this article regarding stretches and warming up:

Warming up, stretching, and cooling down is as important as needing oil in a car

I have read Doug's post on the list of stretches, but a set of videos would be great as well to properly demonstrate the technique.
