Why do athletes have ice baths?
Ice baths basically help prevent injury and aid in recovery. When you exercise your body builds up toxins, mainly lactic acid. Lactic acid can build up in the muscles and cause them to feel sore, function poorly, stiffen, and fatigue. When you jump into a tub full of ice or cold water, the blood vessels contract rushing most of the blood out of the body part and after ten minutes or so the area will become numb. After you get out and your body warms up, your blood vessels get bigger and fill with new blood full of oxygen. It's kind of like flushing your system.
