MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides. MCT’s are more easily digested in the body than other fats, they are composed of Caprylic and Capric fatty acids, (Capric acid is used in food flavouring). Fat molecules are structured in chains and as the name implies is medium chain and are more easily digested than long chain fatty acids.
Sources of MCT’s are Coconut oil, Palm kernel oil, and Butter. MCT in the body mimic the function of carbohydrates and as such encourages caloric thermogenesis at a greater rate. They are used for muscle energy, fat burning, and production of ATP. MCT’s are available in supplement form and are normally used in very low calorie diets such as the ketogenic type of diet (High protein-Low carb). MCT’s are great for hard gainers as they are a good source of extra calories without the side effect of fat storage which comes from other fat sources.
