A calorie is a measurement of heat required to raise one kilogram of water one degree Celsius; and is the same as kilocalorie (Kcal). All foods are classified as their calorific content. Calories are used to measure a foods energy content. The more calories in the food, the more energy it can provide. Protein and carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram and fat has 9 calories per gram.
