Compound exercises build the most muscle. So if your goal is to build muscle then your workout should consist mainly of compound exercises. A compound exercise is an exercise that involves more than 1 muscle group and joint movement. Examples are the bench press, squat and row.
The compound/isolation ratio in your workouts should be about 3 to 1. So 3 compound exercises for every 1 isolation. Let's take a chest workout for example. You could do 3 compound exercises first, bench press, incline dumbbell press, dips and then 1 isolation exercise, dumbbell flys. You should use a similar structure in all your workouts. We have loads of solid workouts on this site, see our workout routines section.
