BCAA stands for Branched Chained Amino Acids. These are the essential amino acids Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine. The branch chain amino acids can unlike other amino acids, can directly provide energy to muscle tissue by taking the place of glucose in energy pathways if the diet is low in carbohydrates, this is achieved by an enzyme activation that breaks down BCAA’s for energy. But in the presence of sufficient energy and adequate carbohydrate fuel the enzyme shuts down its activity and limits the amount of BCAA breakdown, conserving the body’s protein.
