Is rest/sleep important for bodybuilding?

Yes, rest and sleep are extremely important for bodybuilding. If you don't get enough rest and enough sleep every night your body will not be able to recover fully and you will limit your muscle gains. Most of the muscle repair and growth takes place while you're sleeping so you should aim to get at least 8 hours every night.

This is also why it's important to have a protein shake before bed, to give your muscles some fuel to repair. You should also allow at least 48 hours between working the same muscle group, and do not train a muscle group if it's sore from the last session.
