Yes is it possible to gain muscle without the use of supplements. However, unless you gain weight easily (meso/endo body type) you will find it hard to get the sufficient calories and protein intake throughout the day without the use of supplements.
Also, because of our busy lifestyles we don't have time to prepare the right meals and eat at the right times so this is when post-workout and meal replacement shakes come in handy. I would definately recommend supplements for ectomorph (thin) body types as you will need maximum calories to grow.
