When you train hard in the gym you break down muscle tissue and lose glycogen. This can send your body into a catabolic state. Catabolic means your body may be breaking down muscle tissue. To prevent this, you need to get protein and simple carbohydrates into your body as soon as you can. The easiest method is with a post-workout shake. You should have a shake as soon as you can following your workout then have a well rounded meal containing complex carbohydrates and protein about an hour later.
